The End of Time: The Next Revolution in Physics

この本の存在はリー・スモーリンの「迷走する物理学」で知った。自分の好きな分野を好きなだけ研究するために大学にさっさと背を向けて（ロシア語の翻訳で生計を立てながら）「時間物理学」の分野で一流の域まで登ってきた在野の物理学者の本だ。

そもそもは学生の頃に読んだポール・ディラックの本にあるらしい。量子力学と一般相対論の統一を模索していたディラックがこう書いたらしい。'This result has led me doubt how fundamental the four-dimensional requirement in physics is.'

バーバーはこの言葉の意味するところ（What is time?)を考え続け、はやりのstring theoryなどには背を向けて物理学の基礎を掘り返す仕事に没頭し、こういう結論に至ってこの本を書いたと言う。
'I now believe that time does not exist at all, and that motion itself is pure illusion.'

実はこの本は１週間前に読み終わったのだが、なぜこの結論に至るのかがつかめずに読み返していたら１週間経ってしまった。まだわからないことばかりだが、切りをつけるためにとりあえず書いてみる。

基本的な動機は量子宇宙論（量子力学と一般相対論の統一）でalpha point（最初の点）を考える時の困難を乗り越えるためにはtimeless physicsが必要（より簡単に説明できる）ということらしい。

そこで、timelessといういうconceptで物理学全体が書き直せるか、書き直せるとしたらどういう良い事と悪い事があるか、というのがえんえん350ページにわたって書いてある。数式は全くないので、文章と絵で喚起されるイメージに頼った議論である。

肝はこのあたりではないか。
'This is the goal I am working toward: time will become a distance through which things have moved. Then we shall truly see time as it flows, because time will be seen for what it is – the change of things.'
'The important thing is to get away from the idea that time is something. Time does not exist. All that exists are things that change. What we call time is – in classical physics at least – simply a complex of rules that govern the change.'

タイムカプセルもキーワードらしい。文章で書くと、'By a time capsule, I mean any fixed pattern that creates or encodes the appearance of motion, change or history.'ということらしいが、ターナーの雪嵐という絵を出してきて、この絵の中に封じ込められているのがタイムカプセルだと言っている。私の場合は、フェルメールの「牛乳を注ぐ女」かな。とにかくそんなものだ。

そして、こんな感じになる。'The aim is to show that quantum mechanics could create a powerful impression of history by direct selection of special configurations that happen to be time capsules and therefore appear to be records of history.'
あるいはこんな感じ。
As Bell says, 'We have no access to the past. We have only our “memories” and “records”. But these memories and records are in fact present phenomena. Our only evidence for the past is through present records.

困ったのは、エルンスト・マッハの力学がわかっていないとどうも大事な部分が把握できないということだ。たとえばこういうくだり。'Time and change come to an end when Machian classical dynamics meets quantum mechanics.'

図書館で「マッハ力学」というのを見てみたが、かなり退屈そうなのでさぼってしまった。これは英語版のWikipediaで勉強する予定。

人間の意識や認識論と絡めて時間はイリュージョンではないかという議論は時々見かけるが、物理学でごりごりとtimeless physicsを追求するというのはかなりの離れ技で楽しめる。

でも一番面白そうなところはわかっていないと感じるので、参考に挙げてあった本をいくつか読んでいて、また再読したい。
